The wonders of Corcovado National Park have been recognized by several travel magazines and environmental publications in the past, among them Discovery Corp. which considered it as one of the best National Parks in the world, and National Geographic which described it as “the most biologically intense area in the world when it comes to biodiversity”; today, the beauty of this park located in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula was included in the third place of the “25 Most Spectacular National Parks in the World”, ranking published by El Viajero segment of Spanish daily El Pais.
“Exotic, exuberant. Are some of the adjectives earned by Corcovado National Park, in the isolated Osa Peninsula, in the south of Costa Rica, one of the biggest and unique primary tropical rainforests in the world, where several Ecotourism agencies operate. It was created to protect all its biological richness from the gold seekers and the natural resource exploitation, and in its 13 ecosystems – mangroves, swamps, palm groves,- lives the quetzal, the poison dart frog, the crocodile, the puma, the jaguar and four species of sea turtles”, describes the publication.
Corcovado encompasses 42,750 land hectares and 5,372 marine hectares, it includes a wide variety of wildlife in its diverse ecosystems.
Even when it is considered one of the most beautiful National Parks in the world, Corcovado receives low visitation from tourists in comparison to other National Parks in Costa Rica due to its difficult access and distance; in fact only 1% of its visitors are national tourists.
This park is also constantly threatened by illegal activities such as hunting, logging and mining. The number of park rangers and security in the park are insufficient.
The ranking includes parks all over the world, in America and listed as number one is the Iguazú National Park (Argentina-Brazil); National Park Los Glaciares in Argentina; Banff National Park in Canada; Canaima National Park in Venezuela and Galapagos Park in Ecuador all in the top 10.
