Sierpe River Mangrove Tour
The Sierpe River Mangrove Tour is one of the best ways to explore Costa Rica’s largest stand of virgin mangroves. From the comfort and shade of a boat, you will slowly cruise through the Térraba–Sierpe National Humid Forest Reserve, a vast ecosystem of more than 24,000 hectares. This flooded forest is home to four mangrove species (Rhizophoraceae, Combretaceae, Pelliciera, and Avicenniaceae) and is an important sanctuary for countless forms of wildlife.
Wildlife You May See:
-
More than 100 species of birds, including the endemic Mangrove Hummingbird (Amazilia boucardi)
-
Crocodiles, river turtles, boas, iguanas, and tree frogs
-
Three species of monkeys: Squirrel, Howler, and White-Faced
-
Sloths, coatis, and the elusive Silky Anteater
-
Many birds including herons, owls, parrots, and migrating shorebirds
The Experience:
The tour departs from Drake Bay by boat at 6:30 am and passes through the adventurous Sierpe River mouth before winding through countless mangrove channels. Your highly trained naturalist guide will amaze you by spotting well-camouflaged animals hidden in the trees and water.
After exploring, we stop for lunch in the town of Sierpe at a local restaurant or return to Drake Bay for a meal depending on the day’s plan.
Departure: This tour leaves early morning (6:00 am), though later departures may be available depending on tides and conditions.
