Just 12 miles offshore from Drake Bay lies the Caño Island Biological Reserve, one of Costa Rica’s best dive sites and a truly world-class SCUBA destination.

What You’ll See

At Caño Island, divers encounter both pelagic (open ocean) species and Pacific reef fish—many of which are also found in the Galapagos Islands. Common sightings include:

• White-tipped reef sharks (up to 2 meters long), silky sharks, bull sharks, and occasionally hammerheads

• Manta rays and hundreds of lesser devil rays

• Schools of jackfish, parrotfish, snappers, barracuda, tangs, and surgeonfish

• Free-swimming moray eels, often 2 meters long

• Dolphins and, during whale season, the chance to dive to the songs of Humpback Whales

Tour Details

• 1-hour boat ride from Drake Bay to Caño Island

• Two-tank dive (approx. 45 minutes each) at hotspots around the island, including Bajo de Diablo

• Stop at Caño Island between dives to explore on land

•  Picnic lunch at San Josecito Beach before returning to Drake Bay
